The upper tiers of the arena. It is still in use today for concerts etc and seats 16,00 people. There is a panoramam shot of the whole arena in the panorama album.

We bought a combo ticket that allowed us entry to this rather strange roman building, the Maison Carree which formed part of a much larger structure and was used as a temple to roman gods. Inside we saw a 3D movie which was really rather good, looking down the point of a sword etc!

We hiked up to the nearest hill we could find, to see the Tour Magne ruins. It was very hot so by the time we go to the top of the hill, a big flight of stairs was too much just for a view over Nimes!!! Phew...

At the bottom of the hill was a lovely park with water features etc and a cafe where we got a cold drink.

We stumbled upon this other roman ruin which was also in the park but not marked on any touristy maps. You could walk right inside and have a look, no ticket needed! I think the sign called in the temple of Diana.

We visited the Camargue area not far from Avignon, and this place called Aigues Mortes we think the name means point of death! the large tower you can see in this photo is the Constance Tower, heavily fortified and part of the medieval walled city of Aigue Mortes. Stunningly, the walls of the tower area fully 6 metres thick!!

This photo shows the opposite corner of the walls of Aigues Mortes. Tim and Karen went for a walk around the top of the walls but didn't have time to walk the whole 1.5 miles length.

Constance Tower even has a moat... and a nice view from the top! It was used as a prison for protestants for quite a few decades when France was hoping everyone would be a good catholic.

One of the canals that wend their way through the Camargue wetlands. We took a boat trip around a couple of them, unfortunately you couldn't really see that much from the boat except lots of riverbank!

On the way back from walking the walls, Tim spotted this wee fella trying to get some sun (shade?).
